  • Friday afternoon I was catching up on facebook & saw the meteorologist was saying people are calling in saying they see a UFO in Mishawaka. I clicked on the comments & down the line someone said it is probably something for the Chicago Air & Water show. I thot wow that sounds fun. So I googled it & discovered it is free. Gary said we should plan it as a suprise for the children.

We got most of them to bed by 7:45 & told them we would wake them up early for a family outting. Everyone was so excited. I ran to town to get a few things to pack a picnic lunch. Of course I had to run thru McDonalds for my "large Dr. Pepper- no ice." See I have actually gotten lazy in my adiction these days. Lazy as in I don't have to get out of my car at the gas station anymore. I've discovered McDonalds pop is even better than the gas staions! And I never leave the car! So anyway... that Dr. Pepper kept me awake until midnight!

The alarm went off at 4 a.m. As soon as we were packed up we headed to Chicago! They advertise it as a free event but to get a decent parking spot you had to pay $40!!! The show was by a beach. We got there 2 hours before starting & got good seats. The children had a blast playing in the sand waiting for the show to start. The sky was a bit overcast. I told Gary if it would stay like that all day it would actually be perfect!

The show started promptly at 10 & after about 15 min. it started to sprinkle. Thank goodness I had borrowed some umberellas from mom. We huddled under 3 umbrellas & the show was delayed for 25 min. to watch the weather. We got out food & books & tried to make the best of it. Then they came on the loud speaker & said they are asking everyone to leave the beach NOW. A bad storm with high winds & lots of lightening headed our way. Mad scramble to pack everything up. We use the buddy system when in a place like that. Gary, Shania & I all in charge of one child. We got all the lawn chairs (6) & cooler & tote & 3 umberellas & got in the midst of the crowd. I thot for sure we were gonna lose each other! Then it got REALLY windy & they told us to put down the umbrellas. We did & it got NASTY out there. It rained so hard & fast... water was seriously getting in my contacts & I couldn't see. You had to cross this walkway across 4 lanes of traffic. Suprisingly Cameron was able to keep up but he was so scared! We were a long way off from our truck. Finally took my flipflops (that had heels!) off & went barefoot. People everywhere! And everyone was SOAKED!

We finally found the truck, threw our stuff in the back & got in. The parking lot was so full of water that when you stepped off the sidewalk it went above my ankles. Natashas flipflop fell off & was floating! LOL. Talk about miserable! Not a dry spot on any of us! Some of us were laughing and some of us were NOT. What would be your guess for what my reaction was?? Laughing of course! We looked absolutely pathetic & Gary promptly backs out of our $40 parking space & says we are heading home! My idea was everyone else is wet too & if they continue the show in an hour we will not be the only drowned rats there! So we parked again. Gary took a nap. The rest of us read books & I tuned in to the radio station that was broadcasting the show.

We sat there for at least 3 hours. Mom kept texting wich kept me entertained! She thot it was hysterical! =) Finally they announced the show would go on but would be greatly reduced. We hauled all lawn chairs & umbrellas back over there. Ended up being a fun show but only about an hour and a half long instead of the planned 5 hours.

There seriously was a washout not far from there in town & a mans SUV went down in there. He was able to get himself out but was taken to the hospital. The one announcer said it rained 1-2” in 30 min.

We had planned to eat out for supper. We had dried off somewhat in the sun but looked kinda pathetic! My shirt got dirty from hauling those dirty sandy lawn chairs. Gary was carrying one in a redish colored bag & it stained his shirt yellowish-orange. But we all love Chinese & decided to stop at a buffet. I laughed the whole way in there thinking how awful we all looked… I’m howling as I am reading this. Too bad I had no camera on this outting!!!

While eating Shania & Gary BOTH spilled red sweet & sour sauce on their shirts. By this time I was VERY tired & everything was hysterical to me. Gary had on a tan shirt. I sang to him Red (sweet & sour stain) brown (his shirt)yellow (lawn chair stain) black & white they are precious in his sight… Jesus loves the little children of the world! Then we got the bill…. $51!!!! We never have to pay that much at a buffet for children. I laughed even harder. =) Finally arrived home at 8:45 p.m. Fell exhausted into our beds & this afternoon watched the airshow live on the internet! I think we definitely made memories!

We spent the afternoon sleeping & tonight around the campfire. Then took a trip down memory lane & played Andy-over over the little shanty. Kids loved it.

Hope you all have a great week!

  • We left Monday at 5 a.m. You know how it always is… mom stays up way in the night trying to get everything organized. I went to bed at 1:30 & got up at 3:30!!!
Everyone was raring to go… everyone that is except mom. Mom struggled with a major headache & eyes that needed to be propped up with toothpicks!
After about 4 hours… I was awaked by the hubby saying something is wrong with the Suburban. It shimmied so bad. We pulled off at the next exit. Found a truck stop. They told us to keep driving to the 4 way stop & see if the garage there was open? I thot we were not going to make it. The Suburban shook so bad.
The garage looked like something from a different era. The mechanics just standing outside shooting the breeze. Very laid back. But very helpful. Upon closer inspection the guy showed Gary a big bulging area in the one tire. Says we were just ready to have a “blow-out!” Thank-you God for your protection… if it would have blown when we were going 70 mph on the interstate… that could have been bad.

Gary got all the luggage out to get to the spare. The guy helped change the tire & didn’t want to take any $ for it. Meanwhile I spied that right across the road was a store with a picnic table. So I took the children over there & we had ourselves a little impromptu picnic.

When we got on the road again Mikala reminded us that Daddy had prayed before we left home. He asked God to keep us safe & that the vehicle would run well. He had prayed that if something were to go wrong that it would be an easy fix. God definitely was watching out for us right down to having a picnic table available for our lunch.

We spent the day at KY Horse park.

We took a trolley ride with Ben & Bert… these big English Shires.

Mikala & Shania got to sit right up front with the driver.

    We watched some horse shows.

    ***

Got to see Western Dreamer… He’s a standard bread that won over 1 million dollars.

After leaving the park, Gary wanted to stop & see the Red Mile race track.

    The dirt is so red!

3 of our children have never slept at a motel that they can remember. That was a BIG highlight of this trip for them. And to be able to go swimming! Both nights we had the pool all to ourselves which was fun. By bedtime they were always tuckered out!
Mon. we spent at Cumberland lake.

Decided it would be easier to take the shirt off than to deal with orange stains! LOL

Stopped at Bread of Life Café owned by the Galilean Home. Was fun to see a few of the people that I knew from when I was in VS there.

    !!!

Wed. we headed to the Creation Museum & met up with Orlin & Pam (our good friends from PA)

Spent the evening with Orlin's at a motel & had a total party! Our rooms were quite LOUD! But we had a great time.

Thurs. morning we left for home. It was 94* & the air went out in the truck. =(

We had a picnic at a cute park we found in Kokomo. There was a covered bridge we walked thru.

Here Cameron is chasing daddy with his water bottle!
So now we are home! Got mounds of laundry & a weedy garden, but trust we made good memories with the children!

  • My mom is 60!!!

My Mom celebrated her 60th birthday on May 2nd. We planned a big surprise party for her. My sister from KS came in on the train Wed. night & hid out at Fonda's until the next morning. Then we all met over at Living Water to decorate.

Of course when it's Orendorf's planning the party there is bound to be something goofy happening. It was very windy & rainy out. Fonda arrived with 15-20 black helium balloons. Her daughter brought them inside the church. She forgot that they weren't all weighted down & a whole bunch sailed clear to the ceiling!!! There was no way to get them down. They have to rent a lift just to change lightbulbs in there! We were sure hoping they would come down before church Sun. morning!
    Anyway...!
    IMG_9374.JPG
My Aunt Rienhilde picked her up & brought her to the party

We announced that before we start with the refreshments we had a special gift to present to mom. Mom thot it was probably something NASTY, but this is what we wheeled out!!!

So much fun seeing mom's surprise!

We had something so funny planned! Fonda found these denture ice cube trays online!!!

I ordered them but guess I forgot to put in my exp. date on my creditcard & till I discovered it it was too late!

Fonda made some really neat bags that we had sitting on the tables.

When it was time to open gifts... we had her sit in a wheelchair! (She is OLD after all!)

It said still HOT at 60!!!

Such a fun time we had! We then had everyone share a funny story about mom or a way she has been a blessing to them.
After cleaning up we went to NewMar to surprise Dad. He had no idea Dorinda was here.

Troy & Cameron are at such a fun age. Here they were having a pillowfight!

    Best Buddies!!!

The children have been enjoying the snow! Grandpa gave them sled rides behind the miniature horse & Grandma taught them how to make snow ice cream! What fun! DSC02725.jpg It actually tastes pretty good! Cameron was so into the ice cream making! He gobbled a whole bowl down & wanted to make more. He was shivering so bad I wrapped him up in a blanket!

The end of December I planned a tea party in honor of Shania (13) & Mikala's (7) birthdays. We had so much fun getting ready for it. Some of the guests dressed up.

We had a special table for the "younger" ladies. They had tiny cups & teapots. I think the highlight for them was pouring their own tea.

My family got together on Christmas Evening. She had a big meal & then they had some neat games set up out in the garage that everyone enjoyed playing.

Grandma & Grandpa Orendorf & all the grandchildren

Gary's parents went to OK for Christmas so we celebrated the week before. I did a real good one! I called my MIL & offered to bake bread for the Christmas meal. I baked it but totally forgot to take it along to their place. Nobody asked about it either. Thru lunch Dale asked Mary why there was butter & jam on the table & no bread?!!!  And she didn't answer. All of a sudden it hit me WHY there was no bread. We got a good laugh out of that.

DSC02692.jpg Cameron kept sneaking candy canes!

    DSC02693.jpg DSC02694.jpg DSC02695.jpg DSC02697.jpg

Grandma Miller gave the girls scrapbooking supplies. I called this evening Jr. Scrapbooking!

Christmas vacation passed way too quickly, but we all enjoyed having Mr. Cappuccino home for 1 1/2 weeks. We started something over vacation & have kept doing it ever since... we have brunch every morning at 10 & then an early supper. This works real nice with homeschooling. We do chores, laundry & etc & then after brunch we head to the basement for school. The girls like to help in the kitchen, so there is usually a squabble about whose turn it is to fix the food!I'm glad they all seem to enjoy being in the kitchen.

My dad turned 60 this week! The "Jubilees" at Pleasant Grove had a fun night & invited all us children to show up at 8:00 & make a big commotion for dad's birthday! I'll let the pictures speak for themselves!!!

    DSC02733.jpg  DSC02736.jpg DSC02738.jpg DSC02740.jpg

They didn't even recognize some of us at first! We had drums beating & whistles blowing! It was so much fun!!! You only turn 60 once, ya' know!

We are not very excited that Gary's sister & family will be moving to VA.  Her husband has been working out there for quite a few months & then comes home every couple weeks. I don't blame them for wanting to be together!!! But we will miss them so much.

Well, theres our last several months in a nutshell.

    Blessings!

Mikala is Studying In History about how & why they made mummies in Egypt. Did you know that back then the Egyptians thought it was important to preserve the body so that dead people could go on to the next world?

So to bring this more to life we are doing an activity where we make a “mummy” out of a chicken. It will be a long process… like pro six to eight weeks. Here I have documented the whole process for the sake of any other homeschoolers out there who would find this interesting.

    homeschool7.JPG

First, you remove all the liver, heart, & gizzards. You can mummify these but they continue to smell even after being dried. We washed the chicken with rubbing alcohol. This reduces the amount of bacteria that will grow on the bird.

    homeschool6.JPG

Next we mixed baking soda, baking powder & lots of salt. This mixture is similar to the natron salt that the ancient Egyptians used. We poured this mixture inside the cavity of the chicken . He is being stored in a freezer bag where he is also covered with the salt mixture.

    homeschool8.JPG

May he rest in peace!! LOL!

We had to check him several times a week. If the salt was wet you had to give him a fresh bed of salt & soda. I was really amazed that after eight weeks of this, the chicken did not stink!

We made a scented oil using oil & cinnamon. You mix the ingredients in a jar & then put in a sunny location for a week. This was then used as perfume, as the Egyptians did, in the mummy making process.

    DSC02715.jpg

At the end of 8 weeks we took the chicken out of the salt mixture. Dusted it off real good & rubbed it with the scented oil. We stuffed the inside of the bird with fabric.

We tore an old bed sheet into 1” strips & dipped them into glue. (1-2 parts water to 1 part glue)

    DSC02716.jpg

Thus began the wrapping process of the dearly departed! It was quite messy to say the least

    DSC02719.jpg

Who ever said home schooling can’t be fun?! This project was interesting & I don’t think Mikala will ever forget her lesson on mummies!
